European cancer immunology and immunotherapy summer school (EURO-CISS)

Objectif

The basic principles underlying tumour immunology have evolved considerably. It has been established that :
(1) the normal immune system is rarely a significant barrier to tumour growth,
(2) most tumours are antigenic but few spontaneous tumours are immunogenic and
(3) manipulation of the immune system can result in complete tumour eradication. Although the first two principles are well established, the third has been shown in only a few cases so far. In fact, immunotherapy often fails or is otherwise inadequate even in the presence of a potent immune response. It is therefore crucial to probe
(1) which properties of the immune system contribute to poor immunogenicity and how the this property can be stimulated and
(2) how cancer cells present tumour-related barriers to immunotherapy.
