Application of expert systems to basic oxygen steel-making

The aim of the research is to develop an automatic system for monitoring production plant and its performance, with the possibility of diagnosing malfunctions and their causes. An incident warning system is envisaged, and attempts will be made to set up a system that takes automatic corrective action to restore the plant to satisfactory operation. The computer programmes will be drawn up and tested off line during the first year of the project; during the second and third years, the computer will be transferred to an industrial plant and the programmes tested on line and developed.
