Objective The radial distribution of gases at the blast furnace throat will be measured in order to obtain optimum adjustment of the burden distribution in the furnace and in particular in the cohesive zone, and hence optimum gas utilization. The following will be measured: 1) the conductivity of the burden to determine the layer thicknesses of the charging materials over the cross section and a large part of the stack height, 2) the solids temperature of the whole burden surface, 3) the profile pattern of the burden, 4) the distribution of throat gas temperature over the furnace cross section. Data from the THYBAS process control system and measuring systems should then allow the distribution of gases to be calculated and gas utilization to be improved.
