Development of a european advanced level course in breast disease management for surgeons (EURALB)

Objective

Currently in Europe, there is a shortage of specialist breast surgeons, a shortage that becomes critical as Europe moves to specialise in key medical areas. EURALB aims to overcome this shortage and address training need deficits across Europe by adapting the British Association of Surgical Oncologists (BASO) course 'Advanced Management of Breast Disease', held annually at the Royal College of Surgeons, London and hosting it in countries across Europe to ensure that surgeons in all countries may access the course. A consortium of leading surgical societies, training organisations and teaching hospitals has combined to host two 'pilot courses' in Greece and Austria to create a model for the adaptation and hosting of the course to meet specific training needs in defined catchments areas. This model may then be used to launch Europe wide training.
