Surface rougness of steel sheets for pressing

Objective

The measurement of surface roughness with the aid of modern stylus-type roughness meters is capable of determining a large number of parameters, whose interpretation is, however, anything but clear and unambiguous, since they do not yield a description of the surface of steel sheets for pressing that can be clearly correlated with the latter's service properties. Studies conducted hitherto have, for the most part, yielded qualitative and generic results that have done little to change users' demands, which are made on an empirical basis. The general aim of this research is therefore to produce a description and characterization of the surface morphology of steel sheet for pressing that allows a simple and direct correlation with two service properties: the aesthetic appearance of the painted sheet and its suitability for pressing. With special reference to aesthetic appearance, the applicant proposes to check and, where necessary, describe its relationship with the surface of the bare sheet, describe the contribution and filtering effect of the various paint layers, and indicate and possibly check ways and means of improving the quality of the product.
