Obiettivo Cold-rolled thin sheet with electrolytically deposited zinc coatings is being increasingly used as car body material because of its good resistance to corrosion. Since pure zinc coatings take far longer to be welded and painted than uncoated cold-rolled thin sheet, alloy coatings, e.g. ZnFe are also being used. The production of these coatings is however problematical, since, in particular the ZnFe alloy segregation is electrochemically more complicated, and more likely to be effective than the Zn segregation. Laboratory tests will be carried out to determine the effect of the segregation parameters on the formation and composition of ZnFe coatings. A laboratory strip galvanizing plant will then be used to produce larger test volumes.
