European deep ocean margins: a new training-through-research frontier

Objective

European Deep Ocean Margins (EURODOM) provides a major framework for training young researchers in a fascinating field, at the interface of Earth and Life Sciences. at the crossroads between Academia and Industry, and at the new frontier of exploration for energy resources: the continental slope and the deep- water hydrocarbon provinces on Europe's margins. While the sea-going resources mobilized through the close links of the EURODOM RTN with the European OMARC cluster of projects offer significant space for training at sea, network participants offer some of the best data processing and analytical facilities in Europe. Our general goal is to provide advanced training and educational opportunities for pre- and post-doc young researchers to meet the linkages between Marine Geosciences, Environment and the hydrocarbon industry as far as they relate to deep ocean margins around Europe. Research objectives can be grouped in two inter-related blocks:
(i) Assessment of continental slope stability, and
(ii) investigation of the distribution, composition, functioning and significance of deep carbonate mound reefs in the European Deep Ocean Margins.
Each of the blocks includes five specific objectives that, following the management and organizational structure of the project, converge towards three main outputs with future implications :
(1 ) Slope instability risk analysis;
(2) Recommendations for sustainable exploitation and preservation of deep- water reefs; and
(3) Carbonate mounds / slope failure relations as connected to hydrocarbon mobility. Twelve tasks are defined to meet these objectives, each of them finishing with one milestone and deliverable. These include one task devoted to the implementation of an Educational Cyberfink Network on the topics of the network that will strongly increase its external visibility and societal impact.
