Widening our knowledge of derivative fullerenes : modelling, synthesis, characterisation and application in donor-acceptor ensembles

Objective

The research objective of the seven-group 'WONDERFULL' Network is the design and construction of large, highly ordered, functional molecular and supramolecular assemblies. To do this we will use and improve our understanding of fullerene derivative chemistry to produce novel, light-driven chemical donor-acceptor ensembles. They will be engineered for optimal properties in non-linear optics and photo- conversion applications. We will capitalize on the known electron-accepting properties of the bare fullerene cages, and their enhancement by suitable fictionalization. Achievement of the target requires a Research Training Network that has multi-disciplinary input from teams working across the spectrum of chemistry, physics and materials science. This entails a programme of systematic synthesis of novel modified fullerene derivatives (Trieste, Erlangen), spectroscopic, electrochemical and photophysical measurement, materials fabrication and characterization as films, gels and coatings (Patras, Paris, Vienna), backed up by theory, modeling and molecular design (Bologna, Exeter).
