Corrosion of stainless steels in caustic environments

Objectif

The aim of the proposed research work is to assess the behaviour of the main classes of stainless steels in caustics environments containing chloride and oxidizers, sulfur species or amines : the final goal is to identify the temperature, concentration redox and pollutions domains which lead to the different types of corrosion and to obtain data about the limiting conditions for the use of the different classes of stainless steels.
The economical and industrial benefit of this study is to enlarge the field of application of stainless steels in place of more expensive materials; particular interest is to take a best advantage of the SCC resistance of modern duplex stainless steel in caustic environments.
