Neurocognitive comparison of speech and music processing

Ziel

As the supervisor of Dr. Tervaniemi's doctoral thesis and as the head of the Cognitive Brain Research unit, I would like to state the following: Dr. Tervaniemi has worked at the Cognitive Brain Research Unit of the University of Helsinki since June 1990 as a research secretary, graduate student, research fellow, and coordinative researcher of an EU-project. During these years, she has investigated the neural basis of auditory sensory memory by using electroencephalography (EEG) and magneto encephalography (MEG). In addition, she has been actively involved in positron emission topographic (PET) studies. Her research topics cover the fine-grained temporal discriminative functions and temporal integration of auditory information, musical pitch and timbre, elements underlying speech perception, and the different levels and type of musical training and aptitude. In addition, she has contributed to the development of several clinical applications based on the event-related potential (ERP) called the mismatch negativity (MMN). These efforts have resulted in more than 30 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and several talks in international seminars and congresses (including 4 invited talks). In her research, she has successfully transferred and integrated knowledge from several scientific fields into meaningful research questions and, by using optimal paradigms and methods, then experimentally approached them in a highly productive manner. Besides being active in research, Dr. Tervaniemi has taken responsibility in the financial administration, congress organization, and supervision of master's and doctoral theses at the Cognitive Brain Research Unit. Also in these tasks she has been open-minded, creative, and persistent in achieving the predetermined goals. The Marie Curie Fellowship would enable Dr. Tervaniemi to broaden her theoretical and methodological knowledge in a very valuable manner. An opportunity to complement her pre
