Energy wood production chains in europe (ECHAINE)

Objective

The White Paper target is to double the share of renewable energy from 6 % to 12 % in the EU by 2010. This means that, additionally, over 26 Mtoe of wood could be used for energy. The development of the renewable energy sources depends also on the impacts on the environment and the public acceptability. The main goal of this project is to provide data and deal with the key issues in the identification and evaluation of socio-economical and environmentally friendly production for energy wood for heat and power production in Europe. This goal will be reached by: A review of both national and international information and policies on energy wood supply systems and energy production systems, identification of differences between countries concerning the cost structure and environmental and social aspects, by market analysis of energy- wood-based heat and power production, and by identification of flagship projects.
