Objectif Precision Farming is the term for the application of different technologies such as Global Positioning Systems to farm equipment enabling yield variation to be mapped and inputs to be optimised in different parts of a field. A small number of innovative farmers have started to practise Precision Farming. They are confronting problems that need further scientific research. There are a handful of research programmes in place, but these programmes have not been able to integrate the new and relevant experiences of practical farmers. A two-day seminar is proposed at which ~20 farmer delegates will describe Precision Farming problems. About 20 invited leading research workers will listen to the farmers and then help discuss, define and prioritise a list of research objectives. The results will be prepared in a short summary report distributed to leading research centres and industrial concerns to stimulate more targeted research.
