AimTo enable Europe to take the lead in creation and exploitation of next generation Learning systems. Goals To overcome the limitations of the current generation of eLearning systems by accelerating the adoption, implementation, use and further development of open standards that: support multiple as well as single learners support a wide range of present, as well as future, pedagogical models.
RationaleFuture progress in eLearning depends on the adoption of open standards, but so far these limite Learning to a relatively simple, single learner, 'deliver-and-test' approach. Recent developments open the door to sophisticated and diverse pedagogical approaches to eLearning, especially OUNL-EML and IMS-LD, which adapts OUNL-EML to integrate a number of existing eLearning specifications. However, there is a significant gap between the release of a new specification and the full realisation of its potential benefits.
UNFOLD will:
1 Reduce the time taken in realising the benefits of flexible open eLearning standards in Europe.
2 Create an engine for the continuing development of European eLearning practice.
3 Provide a model for the rapid realisation of the full benefits of any other eLearning specification.
The challenge: The definition, implementation and adoption of standards in eLearning involve a hierarchy of groups with very different roles, and highly divergent discourses. They are also relatively few in number and geographically widely distributed. As a result:- researchers are often not in contact with their peers- there is a lack of vertical communication between groups- there is poor communication with other disciplines. Consequently adoption of standards is slow, and critical mass is hard to achieve. At the same time feedback from users is not provided to groups lower in the hierarchy who need it to produce more effective solutions.
Objectives: In order to address these challenges UNFOLD will build text truncated for the purposes of the ESR.
