Objective The main objective of this project is to develop and integrate advanced access technologies for delivery of "true" broadband content over Ethernet based networks to the customer premises. It aims at quadrupling the total bandwidth available to the end user. The Scientific and Technological objectives:1. Develop a physical layer architecture and technology capable of providing Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) over existing telephone network copper cabling2. Generic framework for bonding coding and noise cancellation for information transmitted over multiple copper pairsTo enable the development of the physical layer described above, we will develop new techniques and state of the art signal processing and communications algorithms. These new techniques will be specifically design to cope with the copper infrastructure.U-BROAD contributions will include:- Novel noise cancellation and vectoring techniques for single carrier modulation.- Advanced coding including space-time codes over copper.- Advanced spectrum management techniques for dynamic bandwidth allocation to the different users supporting high throughput and QoS constrains. In order to assess the capacity of multi channel copper system channel it will be necessary to perform channel estimation and modelling of multi pair cross-talk. This modelling should take into account the vectored nature of the interference, which is the basis for the high performance gain potential of vectored transmission techniques.3. Utilizing the "Ultra High Speed DSL" for connecting legacy, video and next generation services to existing and future infrastructure. The main benefits of such technology are:- Reducing expenditures with short Rentum on Investment by leveraging the existing access infrastructure, supporting future, ultra high-speed technologies.- Providing a variety of services, such as data, voice and video on the same access lines.- High bandwidth and text truncated for the purposes of the ESR Fields of science engineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringsignal processing Programme(s) FP6-IST - Information Society Technologies: thematic priority under the specific programme "Integrating and strengthening the European research area" (2002-2006).
