Objectif The SIMAC project addresses the study and development of components for a music information retrieval system including extensive usage of semantic descriptors of musical content. These descriptors are automatically generated in two ways: as derivations and combinations of lower- leveI descriptors and also as generalizations induced from annotated databases by the intensive application of data mining techniques. The project aims also towards the understanding and empowering of music consumption behaviours, especially of those that are guided by the concept of similarity. The gained knowledge about all this (semantic descriptors, similarity, collection organization, retrieval patterns, etc.), regarding users as individuals but also as members of organized communities, will become operational as prototypes for annotating music items and collections, for organizing - sonically and visually- music collections, and for interacting with them in ways that will add value to owned music. These inter-connectable components will be devised, developed, and tested in connection with real communities of music consumers organized around peer-to-peer networks. For executing this project, the SI MAC Consortium has managed to merge complementary partners that cover different facets of the scientific, technical and commercial skills involved in the area of music technologies -i.e. internationally recognized research centers in audio signal processing (Queen Mary University of London-UK), music content processing (FundacioUniversität Rompeu Fabra- E), and artificial intelligence and its musical applications (Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence-AT), which will join forces with industrial partners dealing with electronic devices (Philips Research-NL), music collections, and meta-data exploitation (Matrix Data-UK).
