Objective
Systems beyond 3G are characterised by the use of a multitude of different terminals and the heterogeneity of network. Flexibility and adaptability are key issues for the design of terminal and network architectures to cope with this complexity. The project is focusing on two basic concepts to address these issues: we introduce the simplicity device and develop underlying policy-based mechanisms for an integrated and easily extensible brokerage framework across the therminal and networking environment. The simplicity Device can interact with a variety of different terminals and allows customising terminal and access of network services in a uniform way. This includes, for example, the policy-controlled selection of network interfaces.
The brokerage framework provides the means to orchestrate and adapt network capabilities (e.g. mobility support, QoS, security) taking into account user preferences and terminal characteristics. The same mechanisms are used to re-configure terminals by policy-controlled SW downloads. The project's main objective is to design, develop and evaluate an architectural framework supporting simple customisation of terminals, services and networks.
In particular, our objectives are to:
- Describe user scenarios and business models for the Simplicity approach to derive the system requirements.
- Explore new mechanisms and policies of a brokerage framework in a multi-access networking environment.
- Design a universal multi-application Simplicity Device to provide users with a simple and uniform mechanism for customising services and devices.
- Validate the feasibility and benefits of the Simplicity approach within a testbed
- Contribute to relevant standardisation bodies.
The envisaged Simplicity solution will help resolving a critical issue for the successful deployment of Systems beyond 3G and their acceptance by the user.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
