Obiettivo The HSDPA mode has been recently standardised for UMTS (based on W-CDMA), which provides up to 10Mbps on a 5MHz carrier, but only for best effort packet data services in the downlink. QPSK and 16QAM modulation schemes are used in an adaptive manner depending on the channel state. No soft handovers are allowed and only the users located near to the base station can use so high transmission rates. Therefore, this mode is not adequate for digital broadcasting/multicasting services due to their real time requirements. In B-BONE, the approach followed is to further enhance UMTS network capacity, RAN and Core network functionality and transmission rates, considering both FDD and TDD modes, to accommodate digital broadcasting/multicasting/uni-casting services. The B-BONE project will start by performing the Identification and characterization of broadcasting/multicasting services, including system and spectrum requirements to provide efficiently these services to the users over UMTS broadband networks. Link level simulations will be performed to identify the best adaptive wireless techniques for capacity and transmission rates enhancement (space-time coding/MIMO systems, power and spectrally efficient coded modulation and the utlisation of multiple carriers). In parallel will be developed resource management techniques and resource optimisation algorithms for multicast and broadcast services over an broadband all-IP UMTS network, in particular taking into account the impact of handover and user mobility. Moreover, auction based resource allocation schemes for cost splitting between participants in an aggregate request will be defined and evaluated. The definition of suitable metrics and evaluation scenarios, namely cellular layouts, traffic models, propagation models, mobility models and its implementation into the system level simulator will be followed by extensive simulations to evaluate the capacity enhancements in conjunction with the resources management gain.
