Objective The METACAMERA project aims to investigate and implement the real-time handling of wide bandwidth picture content from the high resolution, high frame rate cameras that will be demanded for future D- and E-cinema applications. Such a camera was developed in the MetaVision project and will be used as a research tool to enable the project to study, identify and deliver technologies for transferring the high bandwidth content in real-time through existing communication infrastructures, by the implementation of loss-less and near loss-less compression and a novel motion handling approach. This will include real-time conversion to other resolution and frame rate formats. There is user need for live in-camera processing and this will be addressed similarly through a technology study. The creation of special effects such as slow motion and variable frame rate using local storage in real-time for live broadcast (e.g. sports) and E-cinema will be developed and demonstrated. In parallel with this, new formats will be actively submitted to the international standardisation process, including extensions to the proposed worldwide standard MXF format. A roadmap of technology will describe the steps for implementation of the technology from the separate hardware elements we envisage in this project through to future autonomous camera implementations. Users from the broadcast, film and post-production industries will contribute their expertise and current and future requirements to ensure that the proposed system meets their operating needs. User trials will be undertaken to investigate the quality and performance of the proposed system under real operation conditions using a representative range of moving image content.
