Objetivo An understanding of the potential for contaminants to be released from the terrestrial environment into groundwater is essential in managing sites contaminated by wastes and residues from processing. Contamination by metallic elements is widespread and an on-going challenge for risk assessment, effective site remediation and the long-term management of contaminated sites. This project proposes the application and development of methods for the speciation of metals in solids and liquids from sites contaminated by metal processing residues and a sequence of laboratory and unique pilot scale leaching experiments to stimulate release and assess implications for the behaviour of contaminated material under climate change scenarios and in the generation of diffuse pollution from brown field sites. The project will involve:(a) field sampling from sites in former industrialised areas of Central Scotland,(b) sequential extraction of solids using modified extraction schemes,(c) experimental determination at laboratory and pilot scale of the response of solids to leaching and the nature of leachate produced,(d) evaluate the results in terms of a decision support approach to future management of the wastes. It will be of use in the identification of trends in pollution of ground waters and the efficiency of remediation activities.
