Empirical and semiempirical models of middle atmosphere wind and wind variability

Objetivo

Within this project, a climatology of winds in the middle atmosphere (height range 0-120 km) will be constructed. The datasets used will be stratospheric/tropospheric analysis on standard pressure heights, and mesosphere/lower thermosphere radar winds in the 70-100 km altitude range, completed by UARS HRDI measurements near 95 km. From these data, empirical models of mean winds and stationary planetary waves in the stratosphere will be constructed, as well as empirical models of mean winds, semidiurnal and diurnal tides in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere. For the mesosphere and thermosphere regions that are not covered by measurements (50-70 and 100-120 km) an assimilative approach will be used. To this aim, a global mechanistic circulation model will be used, in that the zonal mean wind data will be assimilated. From the datasets, also information on stationary planetary waves, interannual variability and long-period variations in the time scale 2-30 days will be extracted, while monthly mean values of these parameters will be constructed also. The result of this project will be monthly tables of wind parameters in the height range 0-120 km from the semiempirical (assimilated) model, and monthly tables of pure empirical winds on the height range 0-50 and 70-100 km. The results may be used as reference or background model in the frame of the new CIRA reference atmosphere construction.
