Reverberating abrasive single use piezo electric driven device

Ziel

Hip prosthesis implantation is one of the most common operations carried out in the EC today (approx. 700,000 across Europe per year). The technique for hip implantation requires the use of a surgical mallet impacted against a smooth tap or broach to open and expose the intramedullary canal in the top of the femur, this opening is the insertion site for the hip prosthesis. This impact based process causes high stress in the femoral component; infra-operative femoral fractures occur in approx. 17% of cases resulting in over 115,000 surgical and post-operative complications per year. We aim to develop a surgical rasp (high carbon steel surface with pressed and ground teeth) and piezo ceramic drive system to actively remove the trabecular bone, spongiform and bone marrow from the intramedullary canal (femur). The more effective cutting and removal process of our rasp and drive mechanism will negate the need for impact based surgical methods and reduce the occurrence of femoral fractures. This new surgical tooling will simplify hip surgery, reduce the rate of femoral fractures. It will improve the competitiveness and productivity of the communities of small firms providing surgical equipment and the community ofsmall, medium and large organisations, the end users and distribution population. After the project, the base technology will find applications in other surgical prosthesis implantation, dental and mining industry, consequently these developments will benefit a wider community of small enterprises servicing these sectors. Our aim is to provide a surgical tool to reduce the risk of femural fractures during prosthetic hip implantation, based on the RASPED tooling being used in 10% of all European hip implantations by 2012 and that we estimate that we will reduce the femural fracture rate by 60% for those using the new system, saving 7,000 patents from femural fractureduring or after surgery and save the European healthcare system over 100 million Euros p.a.
