ROLE OF ICE-OCEAN-ATMOSPHERE PROCESSES IN HIGH LATITUDE CLIMATE CHANGE

The doctoral training will take a broad integrated state-of-the-art approach to initiate a better understanding of the dynamic geophysical processes inherent in high latitude climate variability, high latitude climate response to external forcing, and links with the lower latitudes. The training will directly address key elements of the "Energy, environment and sustainable development" programme of the 5th framework programme KA 2.1.4 2.1.3 2.2.2 and 2.4. The focus is on the role of ice-ocean-atmosphere processes in high latitude climate change. In particular the training site offers possibilities for students to obtain in-depth understanding and hands-on training in high-latitude problems such as formation and decay of sea ice, mixing processes, which are prominent in cold seawater, and air-sea interaction near the ice edge. Also carbon and trace gas transport associated with deep convection and studies of polynyas and dense water formation on continental shelves and in the open ocean, as well as palaeoclimate studies can be performed based on a combination of data collection, analysis and modelling.
