Objective The SCIPE project intends to integrate automatic speech recognition, one of the most innovative and forward looking technologies into process engineering, in order to make process plants better and safer work places, and to give low-skill workers and older employees better job perspectives. ASR will be used to operate the plant and in quality control. Remote control through headsets will free the operator from the control unit. Work places in industrial environments will become more attractive by being cleaner and safer. The control software for process engineering will be designed for the demands of the industrial users. It will be tested first in a simulation programme and later in a test plant with miniature size. Then the resulting version will be applied to real industrial factories, in order to demonstrate the benefits of such a system under the conditions present in a real process environment. The results of the project will be applicable to other industries in the future.
