Objective An extensive range of contemporary molecular and cellular biology facilities will be made available to the Grant Applicant, along with the appropriate scientific and clinical expertise necessary to complete the project. With respect to the Grant Applicant's training, he will be able to acquire new scientific skills and techniques, such as chromosomal mapping, gene isolation and structure determination etc. The Grant Applicant will also have the opportunity to further refine the skills and expertise that he has attained during his initial fellowship. From the point of view of the Host Institute, the combined basic/applied nature of the project is of considerable appeal and in keeping with the research directions of University College Dublin. The fostering of links between basic science and clinical departments, as proposed here is also of interest to the Host. The project is considered by the Host to be highly innovative and timely. Industrial interest in this area is also significant, as evidenced by a recent patent application by Rhône-Poulenc Rorer in which the Grant Applicant is designated as a co-inventor. The proposed study would form the basis of a more long- term examination of the suitability of fibulas as novel targets for diagnostics and therapeutics, to be carried out by the Grant Applicant once re-housed in his country of origin.
