Air pollution and health: a combined european and north american approach

Objective

Under FP4, the APHEA2 project investigated the short-term effects of air pollution on health in 30 European cities, produced results and developed methods. During the same time period the U.S. NMMAPS (National Mortality, Morbidity and Air Pollution Study) project studied the same issue in 100 U.S. cities. The findings of both projects have substantial implications for public health policies directed at controlling air pollutants. Levels. As a follow-up to these multi-city studies, we apply for support for jointly conducted analyses of the European and North American data. The joint project has 2 components: to assess effect modification in air pollution health effects and to test methodologies. This application requests funding for the European side; funding for the North American study has been secured form the U.S. H. E.I. provided European funding would be approved.
