Surface treatments and laminated polymer coatings for reduced cost steel packaging systems

Cel

In order to maintain and extend the proportion of tinplate and allied products used in container manufacture against the competitive inroads of alternative materials such as plastics and glass it is essential that a continuous refinement of products available is achieved and to continue the process of reduction in gauge and use of tin that has taken place in past years. One aspect of this is the use of surface treatments on steel as an alternative to tin or chromium/chromium oxide. This proposed research seeks to explore the role of such novel surface treatment systems, notably organic coatings using thermoplastic polymers in the form of steel/polymer laminates, and to evaluate these products from the aspects of the required surface pre-treatment and the performance of these coatings against existing chromium and tin plating systems in the undeformed and deformed states. Conventional gauge steels (greater that 0.14 mm) will be used mainly but the interaction between metallurgical and surface properties may require some evaluation of thinner gauge steels. This work will be carried out from the WELSH LABORATORY (BSC) and METAL BOX R&D.
