Objective
                                The proposed MObile Wideband GLobal Link sYstem MOWGLY aims at studying the implementation of DVB-S2/DVB-RCS standards for broadband access to users of collective mobile vehicles (aircrafts, trains and vessels). Existing mobile satellite communications systems offer only narrowband services or use proprietary solutions. The DVB-S2/DVB-RCS standard bears the potential for an efficient open approach for broadband access, however the effects of mobility have not yet been properly addressed. MOWGLY will investigate innovative solutions for satellite terminals in mobile environments, such as advanced medium access control for a crowd of passengers using the collective terminals with QoS control and networking technologies. Gathering leading actors of transportation and telecommunication industry as well as SMEs and Universities, the MOWGLY consortium will lever up this challenge. MOWGLY will value and extend large part of FP5 results and outcomes as well as several research activities conducted by ESA that have significantly contributed to consolidate the overall feasibility of our concept. MOWGLY will implement a demonstrator and validate both critical services and functions of satellite access system achieving a highest possible degree of re-use of existing or planned fixed broadband satellite access infrastructure. MOWGLY is targeting typical satellite markets by addressing large-scale of collective mobile environments. To reach a commercial deployment in 2008, MOWGLY will focus with its planned 24-month duration on economic and usage analysis, engineering studies and critical path validation. Trials of prototype communication chain allow validating the technological development, and to assess the offered services with expected customers and derive a business model. The objective of MOWGLY is fully in-line with strategic objective End-to-end satellite telecommunications systems formability applications.
