Obiettivo The objective of this SSA project is to create a Coordination Action between national research programmes in European countries, focussing on Priority Medicines that are most needed by the citizens of Europe. The term ?medicines? is used in a broad sense, including for instance vaccines and new forms of therapy based on biotechnology. Within this broad scope, the project will preliminarily focus on three main areas:1)New and improved medicines for communicable diseases 2)Optimal pharmacotherapeutic treatment for specific patient groups, like children, the elderly, and (pregnant) women 3)Medicines for rare diseases. The WHO in Geneva will identify the needs of European society in these areas, by setting up a list of diseases for which medicines are needed urgently, conditions in specific patient groups for which no adequate treatment is available and factors that may influence compliance. Special weight will be given to the burden that society has to carry due to disease, and to conditions which are relevant for developed and developing countries. This study has started prior to the SSA project and is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Health. Preliminary results should be available by 1 March 2004. The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) will make an inventory of national research programmes in a number of European countries, in order to identify common denominators. Potential participants and possible ways of cooperation for a Cooperation Action, like sharing of calls, will be explored. The results will be discussed at a high level conference during the Dutch presidency, hosted by the Dutch Ministry of Health, which will be financed from the SSA budget. As a result of this project the outlines for an ERA-NET Co-ordination Action on Priority Medicines will be available by March 2005.
