Data-Grid Environment and Tools for Distributed Management and Analysis of Large Sets of Scientific Data

Ziel

Grid based computational infrastructure has emerged as a natural response to the demands of computing applications worldwide which are becoming more complex and demanding in terms of resources as well as increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary. We will create a framework for Data-Grid computing that unifies resource access and representation in a user-friendly environment that is ubiquitous, adaptive, robust, and scalable. This will be prototyped on key test-bed activities that have been chosen by their intrinsic scientific merit, their reliance on remote data access, and their connections to international Grid efforts. These test-beds in the areas of particle physics, astrophysics and bioinformatics will allow researchers to analyse remote data and make scientific measurements that would not be possible without recourse to Data-Grid tools. Knowledge transfer is vital to the success of this project. The consortium presenting this proposal has expertise in the area of the core computer science (parallel processing, parallel architectures, scheduling, heterogeneous distributed systems, dynamic load balancing, artificial neural networks, and optimisation techniques), and the applications (particle physics, astrophysics and bioinformatics). What is missing are the links between the two: people with Grid experience of real world applications and software engineers who can implement our vision. An outreach component to our project will allow us to deploy Data-Grid technology across a variety of activities in both the academic and commercial worlds. Use of our framework in a wide range of disparate activities will allow for a widespread use of the tools for e-science, e-commerce, and the public at large. We will make significant contributions to international data-Grid research, produce world-class scientific results in the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and biochemistry, and activate a large user base for data-Grid in Ireland and beyond.
