Investigations in Brain Sciences and Education Network

Objective

Maurizio Corbetta (MC) is an outstanding Italian researcher in neuroscience that has been active in the USA for 14 years, and that has achieved results of paramount importance in the field of cognitive neuroscience. The Department of Clinical Sciences and Bioimaging (DCSB) is an interdisciplinary department of the University G. D'Annunzio, Chieti, Italy, and is devoted to functional imaging of the human body with a variety of non-invasive techniques available at the Institute for Advanced Biomedical Technologies, co-founded by the EU in FP3. In the IBSEN project the DSCB proposes the funding of a Chair for MC with the aim at establishing a top ranking cognitive neuroscience laboratory and an educational network at a European level.
Specifically, IBSEN deals with research and research training of young and experienced researchers in the field of cognitive neuroscience, in healthy as well as diseased individuals, as well as with several actions geared towards the enhancement of educational activities at a local as well as European level. We plan important experiments to test an anatomical model of attention by using combined functional MRI and high-temporal resolution MEG. The overarching goal is to test whether parietal and frontal cortex control visual attention by synchronization of neurons in visual cortex. For education, the Chair is committed to the organisation of a summer school in neurological sciences modelled after the J.S. McDonnell-Pew Foundation Summer Institute that is held every summer in the USA. The Chair will teach a course in cognitive neuroscience as part of the Ph.D. curriculum "Functional Neuroimaging: from cells to system", which will critically explore major topics in systems neuroscience. Another series of lectures will revolve around more clinical topics and be geared toward neurology residents and staff at the University hospital. Finally, the chair holder will supervise the research work of 2-3 graduate students, and 1-2 post-docs.
