Objetivo The Charles University in Prague will organise the 20th General Conference of the Condensed Matter Division of European Physical Society (CMD 20) in collaboration with the Czech Physical Society and the Institute of Physics ASCR. The CMD20, which will be held in the Prague Congress Center on July 19-23, 2004 (see: cmd.karlov.mff.cuni.cz/CMD/) provides a forum for presentation of research work across the full range of condensed matter physics. The foreseen composition of the audience and the identification of the speakers will guarantee a high Community added value. The CMD20 Program Committee will select excellent speakers able to highlight particular achievements. The key subjects will be chosen, in which is a strong interest to contribute to their uptake in Europe. The format of the meeting will be similar to the most recent ones in the series, held in Brighton, 2002 and in Montreux, 2000, each of which attracted about 1300 participants. The conference program will include plenary talks, up to 32 focused sessions with invited speakers, up to 32 mini-colloquia and ample space for poster sessions. The mini-colloquia offer space for discussing mainly novel topics, while the focused sessions will be devoted to selected important areas of condensed matter physics. The conference will be preceded by a tutorial Student day.Since CMDs have been so far organised predominantly in west European countries we expect that besides the traditional auditorium the CMD20 will attract a considerable number of participants from "east European" countries. Particular attention will be paid to receive sufficient audience formed by young scientists and student to enable passing the advances achieved in the EU Member and Associated States, as well as, elsewhere in the World on to researchers in the early stages of their career. Therefore, much effort of the Organising Committee is devoted to raising adequate funds to support travelling to CMD20 for young scientists.
