Advanced Genetic Analysis in the Post-Genomic Era

Obiettivo

Biological and biomedical science has undergone a radical change over the last decade due to an explosion in the availability of genome sequence data. This has created the need to train a new generation in the latest genetic approaches for the post-genomic era. However, technical skills are increasingly being squeezed out of undergraduate training programmes. To address this, the AGAPE programme will deliver early postgraduate training that combines cutting-edge science, technology transfer, specialist taught courses and generic skills. The key element in AGAPE is the use of an integrative approach to address major questions in post-genomic biology. Training will be available ina broad range of techniques, for example, comparative and functional genomics, expression analysis, population genetics and bioinformatics. Early stage training fellows will be recruited at 3 levels: M Res training (1 year) and PhD training (3 years), which provide the opportunity for fellows to gain an internationally recognised qualification, and short visits (4 months), ideally suited for technology transfer. The benefit to Europe lies in generation of personnel with the necessary skills and motivation to exploit opportunities within biomedicine, biotechnology and pharmaceutical science. This will in turn have scientific and economic ramifications for improved human health and welfare in Europe. The programme will be delivered by an interactive group of 21 scientists with complementary expertise inadvanced genetic analyses. The training site will be the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Leeds, which is rated excellent in both teaching and research.
