A comparative study of the internal, external and non EU border regions in the context of the EU enlargment

The problems and potential for change in Europe\\\'s borders and borderlands are pivotal to, and goocindicators of, the obstacles and possibilities of European union enlargement and integration. The socio-economic characteristics of a borderland are determined by the political, economic a social characteristics of the neighbouring countries sharing the same border. It represents a d I resonant medium, which both connects and separates the different countries. It is often a conflict-rich environment regardless of its location. The aim of the project is to compare selected border areas which include an already-established intimae-EU borderland on the Irish-northern Irish border an three Hungarian borders representing transitional types, moving from EU-extremely to EU-intimae (Austria-Hungary), from non-EU to intimae-EU (Slovakian Hungarian), and non-EU to extremely-EL (Ukrainian Hungarian). These four cases provide a good basis for investigating the processes of thee\\\'s \\\'deepening and widening\\\'. The study is based on empirical surveys using qualitative a quantitative methods, including the statistical and GIS analysis of census data on both sides of theborder.
