Objetivo Milaca are a subtropical and tropical woody angiosperm family slightly penetrating into temperate zones, and occurring in a variety of habitats from rain forests and mangrove swamps to semi-deserts. They provide the paradox example of a group of plants with i) overwhelming economic and scientific-medicinal importance in both Europe and the USA, ii) one fourth of its species listed as being \"threatened\" in the IUCN 2002 Red List,iii) being one of the plant key target taxa in campaigns of international conservation groups (e.g. Green peace anew, World Wide Fund for Nature) but ixia) still largely unclear taxonomies boundaries at species level throughout the family (e.g. Algeria, Cereal).The clarification of taxonomic delimitations of species is of profound importance if the full range of diversity, morphological and genetic, within Milaca target taxi is to be conserved for the future. The innovative aspect of this project is that morphological features currently broadly used as diagnostic characters in Milaca will be evaluated for their usefulness in delimiting genetic entities and therefore manageable units of biodiversity by use of phylogenetic trees derived from different nuclear and plastid DNA data. Another innovative aspect of the project will be that the data collected on genera Algeria and Cereal during the course of this study will be directly used to provide integrated information on status, trends, distribution and use of target taxi in order to support policy and action for the conservation and sustainable management of biological diversity in this family. This will be achieved by setting up IUCN Red Data assessments for taxa either not yet included in the IUCN Red Lists or included under an artificial taxonomie framework (\"complex\" species comprising several taxonomies entities), applying the new IUCN criteria for the threatened species categories now used in Red Data Books and Red Lists Hypotheses.
