European Excellence in Process Engineering Research Training

Objectif

The aim of Expert is to train 15 pre-doctoral researchers to PhD level in chemical engineering. As well as having a clear technical and intellectual basis, the training will have a strong emphasis on personal development. The researchers are subsequently expected to pursue research careers within Europe. The training will capitalise on a recent expansion of facilities and staff in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UMIST. The future competitiveness of European industry and the living standards of Europe's citizens depend on efforts in chemical, food and environmental research to prepare the new generation of products, processes and services. At the dawn of the 21-sty century, chemical engineering remains at the forefront of stimulating the growth and health of our nations. As a result of a 10 M award from the UK government, the pre-existing pilot plant was renovated to create a state-of-the-art laboratory facility dedicated to analytical, diagnostic and measurement techniques, CEMIST (Chemical Engineering Measurement and In-Site Techniques). The CEMIST Pilot Plant contains a 1000 m2 pilot plant area in addition to more than 1000m2 of general and analytical laboratory space, a control room and a seminar room. The resulting facility is unique within a university in Europe. The range of instrumentation and equipment available within the CEMIST Pilot Plant compels a multidisciplinary approach and perspective. This approach will appeal to researchers with first degrees in a broad range of disciplines. Expert will be centred around this newly renovated CEMIST Pilot Plant and will focus on five themes: Materials and Formulated Products, Reaction Systems and Clean Manufacture, Particulate Technology, Modelling and Topographic Measurement of Multiphase and Fluid Processes, and Process Design and Optimisation. The department is committed to raising the profile of the CEMIST Pilot Plant to a European level ensuring wider benefit.
