Cel The proposed EST Training Area is in the field of Electrical Energy Conversion and Conditioning Technology (ECCT). This power-electronic based systems technology is essential to modern society and is the basis of a multi-billion dollar global market. It is a central and often enabling technology for many applications including renewable energy systems, distributed generation, aerospace, electric vehicles and energy efficiency. Environmental factors and efficient use of energy and material resources is resulting in intensive world research and yet a European shortage of postgraduate researchers in the field is widely acknowledged. The proposal defines generic objectives and deliverables for a range of collaborative research projects that are structured to reflect the strengths of the partners. Typical projects address power electronic converters for renewable energies and power system applications, integrated drives for aerospace, electric vehicle applications and high frequency power conversion. Fellows may typically spend between 6 months and 3 years undertaking training at one or more partners and will work on international research projects, will have access to outstanding experimental facilities and training, and can undertake technical e-learning courses. A range of complementary activities is also available, including the opportunity to spend periods in industry and on community based projects. The Training Area project is for 4 years. Over 30 Fellow years of mobility are planned between 5 partner universities led by the University of Nottingham, which is an established Marie Curie Training Site. The proposal is based on many years of collaboration and is seen as a consolidation and development of existing Marie Curie Activities. The training will result in Fellows having enhanced skills and broadened understanding of the scientific and industrial issues that will add to the competitiveness of EU research and industry in this crucial field.
