Early-Stage Training in Advanced Life Science Research Across Europe (E-STAR)

Objectif

At its five sites in Britain, France, Germany and Italy, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - EMBL, an International European Interest Organisation will offer structured and integrated training to early stage researchers leading to a doctoral degree within its International PhD Programme. 15 E-STAR fellows will be internationally recruited with consideration of gender equality. During 3 years, they will receive training that emphasizes interdisciplinary (biology, physics, chemistry, medicine, informatics) in the molecular life sciences in the socio-economic context. This programme will foster multi-site training and development of complementary skills. Internationally recognised, the EMBL has long-standing experience in training young researchers. Together with established European Partner Universities, it issues a "Joint PhD Degree". Supportive human and material resources will enable formation and mobility of independent young researchers for the future. Sophisticated cutting-edge instrumentation and highly qualified scientists attract 350-500 applications per year. Support provided by the Marie Curie Action for the Training of Early Stage Researchers within the HRM (Human Resources and Mobility) Programme of the FP6 will provide 15 training opportunities and enhance the training and hosting of young researchers. Throughout the proposed research training, emphasis will be placed on ethical, safety, IPR, gender, presentation, writing and research management issues. Preparation, organisation and attendance of scientific workshops, symposia and conferences will be well acquainted with one another and all of the EMBL Faculty, establishing an early and highly functional personal and academic network. This will contribute highly to the enhancement and attractiveness of European research to international scientists, and to an active shaping of the future career of young researchers in encouraging them to take on scientific leadership roles.
