Objective In this project we will carry out theoretical studies on the feasible realization and the potential applications ofquantum network with photons (ideal for long-distance information transmitting) and atomic ensembles (ideal forlong-time information storing) . Based on several recent advances in the field, we will propose a feasible way ofcreating high-quality entanglement for quantum network with many atomic ensembles (AEs). The goal ispromising by (1) choosing AEs with suitable atomic level structure, (2) us ing linear optics elements (manipulatingphotons with very high accuracy), and (3) adopting the two-photon scheme (robust entanglement creation, without the stringent requirement of long-distance phase stabilization). Our scheme would significantly facilitat ethe experimental realization of the AE quantum network with high-quality entanglement. By using AEs, we willintegrate within our proposal the existing schemes for storing quantum states of photons and for high-efficiencyphoton counting, thus realizing all ingredients required for a long-distance quantum communication within asingle scheme. The proposed project represents interdisciplinary, challenging, yet promising scientific aims. The host grouphas extensive experimental expertise in AEs, while the applic ant has extensive experiences in the relevanttheoretical topics that are required in the project. Both the host and the applicant will mutually benefit from thecombination of their complementary knowledge in experimental and theoretical aspects. This is po ssible only bythe mobility and professional experiences in several groups in this novel field, which is important for the futuredevelopment of the applicant as an independent researcher. We anticipate that novel scientific resultsaddressing in our proposal will have a strong direct impact on both the fundamental research and technologicalprogress of the European Community in this extremely challenging area# Fields of science engineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringcomputer hardwarequantum computersnatural sciencesphysical sciencesopticsnatural sciencesphysical sciencestheoretical physicsparticle physicsphotons Programme(s) FP6-MOBILITY - Human resources and Mobility in the specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration "Structuring the European Research Area" under the Sixth Framework Programme 2002-2006 Topic(s) MOBILITY-2.3 - Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowships (IIF) Call for proposal FP6-2002-MOBILITY-7 See other projects for this call Funding Scheme IIF - Marie Curie actions-Incoming International Fellowships Coordinator RUPRECHT-KARLS-UNIVERSITAET HEIDELBERG EU contribution No data Address Seminarstrasse 2 HEIDELBERG Germany See on map Total cost No data
