Towards knowledge-based processing systems

Cel

The present Marie Curie Research Training Network aims at the development and application of modelling, simulation and optimisation methodologies, and computer-aided tools for sustainable process integration and/or intensification opportunities in order to reduce cost, waste and energy while taking into account realistic operating objectives (controllability, productivity, robustness of performance etc). The activities of this RTN rely on four Research Clusters. More specifically, Research cluster 1 will co ncentrate on the â¿¿Model-Building Technologies and toolâ¿¿. The research within Research Cluster 2 focuses on several â¿¿Model-Based process systems engineering approachesâ¿¿, Research cluster 3 addresses â¿¿Real-time Optimisationâ¿¿, while Research Clust er 4 considers â¿¿Real life industrial case studies and development of software prototypesâ¿¿. The network is based on a multidisciplinary partnership including: (i) specialists in process systems engineering(ii) experts in theoretical optimisation and ad vanced solution techniques, (iii) experimentalists to verify the theoretical work, (iv) SMEs providing engineering services for the process industries with software development activities and (v) industrial end-users to provide real industrial case studie s for the application of the developed methodologies, algorithms and tools. The network will organise a well structured multidisciplinary training and knowledge transfer programme. Early-stage researchers will attend advanced courses (on process simulati on, design, control, optimisation, hybrid separations, material design, process synthesis and flexible plant operation) run by the participating institutions in order to assist the development of new skills. Organisation of workshops, summer schools, parti cipation in international conferences will constitute key elements of the overall training programme where young researchers will have the opportunity to communicate their results.
