Interdisciplinary training in systems biology

Objective

The overall goal of this project is to provide advanced training to early-stage researchers in Systems Biology. Systems Biology uses a combination of experimental and mathematical approaches to achieve a deeper understanding of the function and operation o f pathways, cells, organs and entire organisms. Systems Biology has enormous potential in future medicine and predictable treatment regimes. The field requires a generation of scientists trained in experimental and mathematical/computational biology. This project unlocks resources and expertise from: (1) Goeteborg: Research groups at Goeteborg University and Chalmers University of Technology being part of the"National Research School for Genomics and Bioinformatics". (2) Berlin: The Graduate School "Dynamic s and Evolution of Cellular and Macromolecular Processes" and the "Berlin Centre of Genome Based Bioinformatics", with groups from the Humboldt University Berlin, the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics plus additional centres. (3) Amsterdam: The R esearch School "BioCentrum Amsterdam", a joint venture of the University of Amsterdam and the Free University of Amsterdam. This EST project relies on the following main activities: (1) Five joint PhD projects, in which students undergo their entire PhD pr ogramme in the project. (2) A programme of twenty shorter stays for PhD students. (3) Joint courses and workshops, which will be a central part of the training, communication, networking and dissemination activities. (4) Opening up ongoing local courses to students enrolled at the different locations. The EST project will contribute to structuring the field of Systems Biology in Europe such that its scientific and socio-economic potential can be used to address important goals of European policies in the he alth and life sciences. With support from the EC the project can mobilise resources from national and regional funding bodies to make Europe an attractive place for pursuing a research carrier.
