International Seminar on the Management of the Shared Mediterranean Heritage

Objective

The EC project HERCOMANES "heritage conservation and management in Egypt and Syria" has raised large interest among south and north Mediterranean research institutions. Today the conservation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries sites and objects is on the international and regional agenda. On the one hand, the UNESCO has added in 1998 to the list of the world heritage at risk cityscapes and archicture produced by various colonial powers throughout the world. On the other, the protection of late 19th and early 20th century’s urban tissues and architecture became a part of the policies of heritage conservation in south and eastern Mediterranean countries during the last decade of the past century. Time is not ask why we must protect this heritage but how to enhance the efforts undertaken to this purpose by emphasising a sustainable conservation management system. This seminar has the following objectives:
(i) Present, debate and disseminate the results of pheromones EC program in particular the new system of managing the conservation of the late 19th and early 20th centuries object and sites devised in Cairo (Egypt) and Aleppo (Syria), to a wide range of researchers, decision makers, NGO's and investors.
(ii) Enrich our knowledge on this issue through the experience of other Mediterranean countries not involved in EC program
(iii) Set up the bases of a scientific network on the "shared Mediterranean heritage" : to strengthen and enlarge the cooperation among academics, professional and decision makers in the region; to exchange and adapt the conservation management tools and to a sustainable heritage conservation process. Holding the seminar and publishing the proceedings that will be submitted should fulfil these objectives.'
