International radio research network

Objectif

The project for which funding is sought is a co-ordination action. Its aim is to develop and extend an international radio research network (IREN) which responds to the concerns implicit in Priority 7.2 of the FP6 "Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society". Radio, the oldest broadcasting medium, occupies an essential place in the cultural inherance of Europe and still has a significant presence in each country, attracting large and loyal daily audience. Yet its presence in academic research an d study, and in public policy debate, does not match either its popularity, its importance in Europe's cultural heritage or its capacity to encourage citizen participation in the creation of a European public sphere. This is exactly the issue adressed by IREN project. There are 13 partners in the proposed consortium, coming from 10 countries - Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom. Each consortium member is active as a radio specialist within a variety of academic disciplines and in contexts where interest in the subject is emergent but still relatively isolated. In several countries, the radio research community has begun to create national networks and seek international contacts. IREN seeks to deve lop and establish durable EU collaboration in the field of academic radio reseach. Expected outcomes are: - A programme of collaborative, interdisciplinary and complementary research, - The creation of an Internet site with the publication online of a data base and a Handbook of Radio Systems in Europe, - The formal constitution of IREN as an association with European legal status, - The recruitment of a wider membership of the associations especially from Southern and Eastern Europe, - Contacts with the Eu ropean broadcasting organisations and industries. The progress of the project will be monitored and recorded by conferences and a final report available publicly.
