Vehicular Information System Interface for Open Network Services (VISIONS)

Objective

The objective of the project is to enable the information exchange between on-board truck information systems and external information systems, through standard and open information interfaces. This objective matches the research domain SUSTDEV-2002-3.2.2.2.7 addressed by the FP6-2002-Transport-1 call that focuses on interfaces between vehicles (or vessels) and infrastructures. The activities of the project are the definition, the design, the implementation and the piloting of an architecture that supports the interoperation between on-board truck information systems and external systems. The main functions of the architecture are: - to collect vehicle data (e.g. fuel consumption, engine status, speed, etc.), cargo data (e.g. cargo weight, pressure, temperature, trailer status) and vehicle documents (e.g. ADR safety cards, transport documents, driving licence, etc.) and - to make such data and documents accessible from external information systems (e.g. transport companies, transport infrastructure administrations such as tunnels, terminal containers, etc.) through open application interface over standard wireless network interfaces under specific authentication and authorization policies. The project consortium consists of two large technology providers (respectively working onTelecommunication and Information Technologies), two university research groups (respectively skilled in software engineering and embedded system development), a SME specialized in technology transfer and five Eureopean level end-users representative of transport companies, truck manufacturer companies, container terminal management companies, tunnel administrations, all interested in increasing safety, efficiency and quality of their processes. These partners will cooperate to obtain the following results: a well defined architecture ready to be standardized, a demonstrable on-site pilot system and a number of dissemination and exploitation actions.
