RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE CLEARANCE MANAGEMENT (INFRACLEAR)

Objective

The aim of INFRACLEAR is to allow optimum use of the infrastructure's "track clearance" by means of an innovative approach for track gauging by using operational monitoring technology and thus to contribute to increase the capacity and safety of the infrastructure. Perfect knowledge of the "track clearance" is vital to guarantee that passengers and freight trains will be able to use the relevant infrastructure, and ensure optimum operation of this infrastructure by accepting larger "vehicles" and cargo. This would make it possible that the rail newly attracts passengers and freight which are currently running on the road. This is particularly important because gauges differ from one network to another and so only detailed knowledge of these networks will make it possible to define and draw up new routes compatible with the space required (using simulation tools), thereby improving rail's offer in competition with road. To obtain perfect knowledge of the "maximum loading gauge" we propose to develop, manufacture and validate (by test runs) an integrated inspection system (measurement device and associated data processing and modelling) capable of checking and recording the data associated with the vital functionality of the railway infrastructure. To be compatible with traffic constraints, the objective is to perform high-speed lines inspection (up to 140 km/h) with high performances in obstacles detection and measurement by running up and down on each track (security and safety aspects in particular after maintenance). The Project intends to achieve these objectives through a series of complementary tasks carried out at European level in order to avoid incompatible solutions with the Member States and ensure effective exploitation plans. The Project meets this requirement through a large European Consortium providing qualified and complementing competencies and experiences. '
