Objective The miniaturization of liquid chromatography involves a number of advances in analytical chemistry and instrumentation development in both discrete areas and in system integration. This is a complex field where doctoral researchers will be able to advance knowledge of their own specialized area in combination with knowledge of the other areas, applied to pollution monitoring, in Europe, but also on a global basis. The Department of Chemistry where the group is situated has a long-standing tradition for taking good care of foreign students and visiting researchers, in a stimulating environment and with a friendly, English-speaking technical and administrative staff. It is expected that researchers who spend some time in the "Oslo Analytical Miniaturization Doctoral Training Site" will subsequently be able to develop new research programs in a more intelligent way in their own laboratory. If they choose to leave their institution after graduation, they will be more able to work effectively in water supply institutes and in regulatory agencies concerned with water quality and assessment.
