Cel The project proposes to investigate the relationships between the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus and the productivity of maize, wheat, and cotton grown under limited water supply in order to identify useful traits for breeding purposes and in order to better understand the adaptation mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus to drought conditions in crop plants and its relation to productivity. For this, varieties of wheat, cotton, and maize with contrasting drought tolerance will be studied in the field in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The same photosynthetic and productivity parameters will be measured both in well watered plants and in plants subjected to low water supply. These are:growth (dry matter accumulation),chlorophyll content, specific leaf area, leaf relative water content, transpiration, rate of carbon fixation, quantum yield of electron transport at photo system II (PSII) and maximum PSII quantum efficiency determined by chlorophyll fluorescence analysis and grain yield.Additional studies on the photosynthetic apparatus greenhouses grown plants will be carried out, especially to assess the role of photorespiration and mitochondria respiration for drought tolerance. In the case of maize, a mapped population of recombinant inbred line segregating for drought tolerance will be used, allowing the identification of quantitative trait loci involved in drought tolerance and the identification of candidate genes. For wheat and cotton, a phylogenetic study will help to identify genetic resources with a high potential of drought tolerance. The results of these studies will provide a better understanding of the role of photosynthesis in drought tolerance of crops and the development of new tools for plant breeding under water-limited environments.
