A Field Ionization Position Sensitive Detector for Neutral Molecular Beams

Ziel

The aim of this project is to develop the first position sensitive detector for neutral molecular beams based on the principle of field ionization. The idea is to provide the molecular beam R&D community with a device which will be a direct analogy to the channel plates used for electron and ion beams. The basic idea is simple: In the position sensitive detector the incident atomic (or molecular) beam is field ionized by an 2D-array of carbon nanotubes. The extremely high curvature of the apex of each nano-sized carbon tube allows obtaining the field strengths necessary for the field ionization (few Volt per Angstrom) by applying the moderate high voltages (few kV). The ionization current measured at each “pixel” will provide directly a spatially resolved image of the incident beam, and thus that of the object if applied in an Atom Microscope. In addition to spatial resolution, the overall sensitivity of this detector should also be significantly greater than that of a standard electron bombardment detector typically used in molecular beam experiments where the ionization probability can be as low as 10-6 (Helium). The final aim is to produce a “proof of principle” position sensitive detector consisting of a large scale patterned array of 4 square pixels each about 250 micron x 250 micron and with a spacing of around 50 micron and to apply it as a detector in the functioning scanning Helium Atom Microscope. When these first experiments have proven successful in terms of stability and sensitivity, it should be easy to develop the higher resolution devices (smaller pixels down to a few microns), which can be designed in accordance with application requirements. One expects from the proposed research a break through from the scanning (i.e. quasi one-dimensional) to the truly 2D-detection of the neutral atomic and molecular beams.
