Policy options for responding to the growing challenge from obesity: a cross-national comparative study

Objetivo

Abstract: The challenge of responding to the growing incidence of obesity will require not only improvements in sciences such as nutrition, it will also require socio-technical policy intelligence. A wide range of different kinds of interventions could use d to influence different aspects of the production and consumption of foods and levels of physical activity. No research has yet explored the consistency and/or variability of the perspectives of key stakeholders towards that range of options, nor have cro ss-national comparisons been made. This project aims to fill that gap. It would be premature to assume that a single uniform combination of policy options would be appropriate for both genders, all social groups or for all Member States. The Commission, Me mber States and many other stakeholders, would benefit from an improved understanding of how different kinds of interventions are perceived by differing groups of stakeholders. This project will use a new powerful technique (Multi- Criteria Mapping) to pro vide an integrative and comparative analysis of the differing perspectives of key stakeholders in 9 Member States on a broad range of possible types of interventions. The project's findings will contribute to identifying policy approaches that are most lik ely to be acceptable and effective at meeting this challenge.'
