Objective The aim of this proposed SSA is to stimulate international cooperation in functional genomics in Europe by bringing together researchers examining microsatellite and variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) markers in human and non-human genetics and genomics. Tandem repeats have recently been neglected in genetics and genomics in favour of single nucleotide polymorphisms, despite the fact that they can have functional effects on gene expression and recombination, and are a major cause of human disease. The SSA will take the form of two week-long workshops, one in London (year one) and one in Hungary (year two). The SSA will involve seminars and practical training in bioinformatic analysis, genome browser use, genetic association analysis, functional genomics, the role of tandem repeats in human disease and SME exploitation of research findings. Participants will include European and International experts, researchers from Europe, including new members states and developing countries and SMEs. It is a specific support action across thematic priority 1, and aims to promote and facilitate international co-operation in microsatellite research by networking scientists for the creation of a research consortium. In addition we aim to promote cooperation with New Members States by organisation of one workshop in Hungary, with a view to participate in future proposals for integrated projects, and also to stimulate and facilitate the active participation of SMEs in the research area.
