Improvement of Fan Broadband Noise Prediction: Experimental investigation and computational modelling

Obiettivo

Research is needed to develop innovative concepts and enabling technologies to reduce aeroengine noise at source. Fan broadband noise is a major aircraft noise challenge now and in the future will be even more important. Novel low-noise engine architecture s, such as ultra-high-bypass-ratio engines and lower-speed fans, can help address jet noise and fan tone noise, but previous EC-funded programmes have shown they are unlikely to reduce significantly fan broadband noise without improved understanding of the source mechanisms. Furthermore, the advances in numerical methods, which have revolutionised tone noise prediction, have yet to make an equivalent impact on broadband noise prediction. PROBAND will address these issues with a major technical leap in provi ding industry with an improved understanding of the broadband noise source mechanisms, with validated broadband noise prediction methods, and with low fan broadband noise concepts. PROBAND will exploit the noise technology and methodology acquired in EC-fu nded projects and national programmes, to develop methods to allow the design of a fan system that will generate sufficiently low broadband noise to meet the EU noise level targets. This will be achieved by developing a better understanding of broadband no ise generation mechanisms using advanced experimental and computational techniques, developing and validating improved prediction methods using conventional computational fluid dynamics, and integrating them into industrial codes, exploring new prediction strategies using advanced computational techniques, and developing low broadband fan noise concepts. The consortium consists engine manufacturers, SMEs, research centres and universities from across Europe. This mix of partners forms the basis for deliverin g the project objectives. PROBAND will deliver an improved prediction capability for broadband noise that will be exploited by the European engine industry to develop low broadband noise fan concepts.
